Travelling in the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is dirt cheap, the perfect place for backpackers. The only problem is that Canadians need a Visa now! Contact the Czech embassy for details.

Backpacking the Czech Republic - Quick Facts

Local Language: Czech, and German is definitely a good backup. Many younger people speak English though, so you shouldn't have too much trouble. Outside of Prague though, it may be more difficult.

Visa Requirements: Canadians no longer require a visa! Since May 2004 when the Czech Republic joined the European Union, they finally dropped the vias requirements for Canadians.

Health Risks: None

Costs: The Czech Republic, and Prague is quite cheap. A little goes a long way here. You can probably get away with $30 Canadian per day, without much difficulty.

My Travels in the Czech Republic

I've only been to the Czech Republic once, and I only had time to check out Prague. It really is a beautiful city, which explains the massive hordes of tourists. The Czech Republic still remains a huge bargain as well for budget travellers.

One of the most notable things about the Czech Republic is that it escaped much of the destruction of World War II. Many old towns and cities remain as they were, which is part of the attraction to cities like Prague. The Czech Republic is also very notable for it's beers. The original Pilsner style of beer was brewed here, along with the real Budwesier, not the American crap version.

If you're going to Europe, and you don't mind going through the visa hassle, than put Prague and the Czech Republic on your must see list. It's one of a kind.

Hotels and Hostels in the Czech Republic

Czech Republic, and Prague in particular gets very busy in the summer. Make your reservations as soon as possible!! I can't stress that enough. All the good hostels and hotels book up quickly, and you don't want to be sleeping on the streets if you can avoid it. Many locals will offer you rooms at the train station. Be wary and use common sense. Some people are legit, others will rip you off. Use your best judgment.

Prague and the Czech Republic

Prague is of course the capital of Czech Republic. It's also one of the most picturesque capitals in the world. It's a fairly large city, but feels like a medieval town, with Prague's large castle overlooking the city. The 14th century bridge is one of the most famous landmarks, and street artists can be found there selling drawing and images of their beautiful city.

One of the most popular attractions is Prague's torture museum. It's small, but has some really interesting although gruesome instruments of torture and descriptions of how the law was enforced back in the day.

Also, there's the Jewish quarter with many synagogues and an extremely old grave yard. It's worth having a walk through to see some of the centuries old tombs.

Perhaps Prague's most famous landmark is the Astrological Clock tower, which has the little puppets come out when the clock strikes the hour. There are many such attractions that keep Prague feeling like a step back in time.

Prague's nightlife is also not to be missed. Lots of bars and clubs, all of which are quite cheap (providing you don't get charged as a tourist).

As always, bring a guidebook! It'll add so much more to your experiences.

Trains to Prague and Czech Republic

Prague is pretty well connected to the rest of Europe, however isn't covered by Eurail passes. You can buy a ticket from the border to Prague though, just ask at your departing train station. It's very, very cheap.
