Traveling in Belize

Belize is another beautiful Central American country wedged between Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. In fact, many people say Belize is more like an island in the Caribbean rather than a mainland country. Part of Belize's beauty is its lack of development. Roads remain unpaved, traffic lights virtually non existant, and jungle abounds along with beautiful sandy beaches.

Local Language: The official language of Belize is English! This comes in handy for those of us who don't speak Spanish.

Visa Requirements: Canadians are allowed in Belize without a visa.

Health Risks: Rabies, dengue fever, yellow fever, malaria.

Costs: Belize is realtively expensive compared to other Central American countries, however you can still get by on a budget of around $40 Canadian per day depending on your level of comfort. If you need to change money, most banks will change Canadian dollars. Otherwise, US dollars are a good alternative.

Travels in Belize

Belize's main attractions are its beaches and all the related activites. Scuba diving, fishing, snorkeling all abound in the shores of Belize's many beaches and you're bound to have a great vacation.

Belize City itself isnt' much to write home about, but if you're travelling extensively through the country you'll find yourself here at some point as it's the main transportation hub. There are however many other sites to see in Belize including Mayan temples and cities.

Lamanai is a large ancient Mayan city with temples, a ball court, and other Mayan ruins. Many people enjoy just getting to Lamanai - You must take a boat up the river where you're guaranteed to see crocodiles!

If the ocean life is more your thing, then you're in for a treat. Belize has the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and nearby is an area known as "The Cayes". The areas known as Caye Caulker and Ambergis Caye are known to be popular with tourists and offer spectaular diving and snorkeling opportunities. The coral and marine life is astonishing and the water crystal clear.

Depending on your level of comfort it's not uncommon to find beds for $10 US per night. You can easily spend $30 or more though, but you'd have a pretty good room. It all dpeends on your budget, there's no shortage of places to stay.

Generally flights to Belize connect through various US cities including Dallas, Miami and Los Angeles. There are also flights between other Central American countries.
