When you want to get away from your ‘normal’ life, there are plenty of ways to head out of town. However, with each form of travel, there are a few basic questions that you will want to ask:

How far am I going?
How long do I have?
Is budget a consideration?
What’s important?

While this seems like an overly simple way to gauge the method of travel, it’s surprising how effective it is.

How far am I going?

If you’re planning on traveling to certain locations or long distances, it’s just not time efficient to travel via any other method besides via airplane. Airplanes are safe, relatively inexpensive, and fast moving. When traveling abroad or even across the country, they’re generally the best option for traveling. If you’re not traveling far, driving, taking a bus or a train are viable options. Cruises are somewhere in the middle as your starting and ending destinations will determine whether this is viable.

How long do I have?

If you’re not in a rush on your vacation or you don’t have specific plans, driving or taking a bus or train can be the best options. Not only are these methods much cheaper than flying, they afford you the most flexibility in terms of your schedule. Instead of having to land in one place, you will be able to move from one area to another as you wish. Trains and buses can give you this freedom without making you get behind the wheel or know the direction in which you are going.

Is budget a consideration?

When you’re planning a vacation or trip, you will want to figure out what is important to you. If the location is important, you will want to make sure that you spend a majority of your money on getting there. If you’re interested in doing certain things when you are there, perhaps your budget will be focused more in that direction.

What’s important?

In any case, you will want to determine what you are willing to spend first, determine if you can travel during less expensive times, and then make your decision based on the three above questions as well. But it’s the overall goal of your vacation that matters the most. How you get there is really only a minor detail.

Planning a vacation is no vacation, but once you get there, the stress of the planning will seem to be a distant memory.
