10-12 weeks only

I am spending the summer in Texas, from May 7 to August 7th. I'm going to visit my boyfriend for a few months while we are in between semesters at University.

I want to work part time while I'm there, to make it easier to afford the trip (and save a little for my next semester), but not sure if I qualify for a VISA. I'm not even sure WHICH Visa I would need to apply for.

It seems like all the work Visa's say you have to have something lined up already. (Sponser?) I was going to apply for jobs on Craigslist or whatever a couple weeks before I leave, or just start looking right when I get there and take whatever comes along first.

Could someone give me some advice?

As a university student looking for part-time work, you probably would not qualify for the typical work permits that most Canadians working in the US tend to get, such as the H-1B and TN. Those are for professional positions that typically require a bachelor's degree. You also need to have a job lined up beforehand.

Have you looked into SWAP's summer working holiday program to the US? You can work in the US for up to 4 months over the summer in almost any job (including waiting tables, retail work, etc). Visit www.swap.ca for more information. You'll need to apply soon as there are only a limited number of visas available.
