1st timer to usa with record

at one time i didnt care about much but that all changed . a fireman from edmonton area i just got married and we just booked our honeymoon in vegas we leave dec 1st... k at one time i know that they would let people across with a minor record they looked out for bad people exp;DUI/murder/drugs.now can someone please help me out i heard there was a new law that passed june 1st 2009 that there is a zero tolarence!! i brought that up today with the travel agent they said all the alerts they got were to cross the border via vehicle you need a valid passport as of june 1st ..will i make my honeymoon
