2 questions about Bristol and gifts to send there

Post Sun Feb 01, 2009 8:49 am

Hi all!

I'm from the Canadian Prairies. I'm afraid I have never been to Bristol, UK., but am obsessed with visiting there someday, as this was the City my beloved grandfather was born and raised in. I am planning a trip hopefully within a couple of years to walk the streets of my ancestors - around St. Georges Road, College Green area, Brandon Hill, etc.

Because of all of my geneaology research has led me to so many wonderful Bristolians who have gone over and beyond to help me, I have a twofold wish:

1) First I wish to send a couple of 'friends' a package of goodies from Canada and I just do not know what would be available there that is different (other than maple syrup and pacific smoked salmon from BC, and I can't send Poutine through the mail!). I am prepared to spend $75 - $100 Cdn. Any suggestions as to what a lifelong Bristolian would like from Canada, or would cherish for sometime? My contacts there would be women...one in her mid-30's and the other a senior (69 - 70 yrs. of age).

2) In my visit to Bristol, I would like to do things on a budget (ie: Bed and Breakfast), no commercial tours, etc. and want to be in a safe, lovely place where I can hang my hat for 10 - 14 days and walk the streets on my own.
I would never ask my Bristol friends for any accomodation, unless they kindly offered, so initial plans are to look after my own accomodation, which I am just fine with.
The internet searching is fine, but it would be nice to talk with someone that knows Bristol, to give me any guidance for the best bang for my buck.

I have anticipated a one person cost of around $2500 - $3000 for this trip...eek! But being an independent sort, who doesn't need more than the basics, I may be able to do it for less.

This is a great site and I have enjoyed it immensenly.

Thanks for any advice that can be thrown my way!!
