it can be a very tricky situation as nelsona pointed out. You have to be very careful and you MUST get US insurance. My canadian insurance covers me now that I am to them a visitor in the United States. As soon as I become a PR, I'm either going to give to car to my mum and dad or start transferring title, plates, etc. If you get into an accident in the US with your Canadian insurance.you're effed!

lulu's got a dilemma, of course, since she is NOT a visitor by any stretch.

Insuarnce co's are always happy to accept premium payments from those who are ineligible for covergae. Then, they deny coverage at the time of an accident.

haha I am too a visitor ! :D Okay, so I am pretending to be a visitor. What the insurance company doesn't know can't hurt them (for now.)

I am in a pretty lousy situation. But I will ammend it soon. I think I'm going to give the car to my family and just buy a new car here in a couple months.

Pretend all you want. Your insurance company can also pretend to cover you.

Don't you worry about me, nelsona. I will be fine. I have never gotten as much as a parking ticket. Anything can happen to you, it's true. But I don't drive that much. My husband drives mostly when we go anywhere. I only drive to the gym, the grocery store, etc. All 5 minute drives and stuff.

But like I say, I w ill only be driving it another month or two. Plus if I ever got into an accident, I would just not go through insurance and pay for the damages if that was okay with the other party.

I worry more about those that might take your experince and act accordingly.

That's a really interesting view of insuarnce though.

I buy insurance with the idea that I'm expecting to be covered, and will use it should the situation that I'm insuring against occur.

Completely the opposite of your vision.

I think my broker would prefer you as a client.

I think you are getting me wrong, here. I had insurance on my vehicle for years in Canada for the exact same reasons you get insurance. I NEED to have my car, or else I would have to sit home all day and wait for my husband, who works 70 hours a week (and weekends) to come home and drive me around. It's already miserable enough not being able to work or go home because of my AP still pending. Don't you think it would be worse if I couldn't even do simple errands?

Also, I still cannot get a New Jersey driver's license. I have no SSN because my EAD has not been approved yet. So what would you suggest I do? Technically, my insurance company does not know I am in the US. As far as they are concerned, I'm in Canada so if something were to happen, i would give coverage.

@loolooloo: Well, the issue is that if you do get into a "real" accident not a fender bender there may be serious issues because you cannot pay 500 000$ in health bills to the other party involved in the accident. Somethings to think about. If I cannot get my car properly insured, I'm driving it back to Canada and leasing something else in the states. I have a two years contract and I'm not sure if it will get extended as things change fast in biotech so I don't know if I will stay in the states.

@All:I have an odd question, should I worry about burned DVDs when I cross the border with my remainder of my things to move to USA?

I really like this forum! Wish I discovered it earlier!

Moon- what you say is true, there is no denying that. But remember, I do have coverage. It's not like I do not have insurance. I'm taking a risk but it has been perfectly fine so far. It's the least of my worries. Cars are much cheaper in the US as well. I didn't realize how expensive cars where in Canada until I started searching for prices here. So I'm sure you will be able to get something nice.

As for the dvds, I wouldn't worry about it. Not something I have heard being a problem before. To be less suspicious though if you are worried, why not take them out of the cases if you have cases for them, and put them where you put your music cds.
