2 weeks in Germany this May what should I do?

Post Tue Jul 29, 2008 10:33 am

I fell in love with Munich two years ago when me and my mother passed through it. I decided to come back this year with a friend. We have two weeks (the first 2 in May) to explore Germany where should we go and what should we do? Were on a budget being university students also so we can't afford anything spectacular. Thanks alot for any help guys I really need it! :D

All depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. Berlin is exciting - especially comparing the different eras - 19th century, Nazi era, communist era (the wall, etc) and now. A trip on the Rhine (especially Mainz to Koblenz or vice-versa) is pleasant and picturesque. Rothenburg is one of several old towns that are pretty and interesting. Mainz has an impressive museum dedicated to Gutenberg, the founder of printing (but bring your dictionary, most of the descriptions are in German only). The Aachen Cathedral was built by Charlemagne, and contains his imperial throne, which is pretty impressive. Most of what I mention is historical; if you have other interests, someone else may know more or you can get specialized guidebooks. For example Germany has a lot of avant-garde art, but that's not my bag. Gute reise! John

Ok thanks alot! I'm going to Berlin and Munich for sure, and the Rhine sounds interesting. What exactly would you find or be able to do in the two towns you mentioned? You sound like you've been all through Germany!

Hi Anita: I didn't reply right away because Fanny's referral to the internet, however abrupt, seemed reasonable advice. Personally, I rely heavily on the green Michelin guides and there is a good one for Germany. I like their system of multiple stars (or asterisks) for the most significant places to see or things to do.

I also hesitated to reply because you had not indicated what interests you most. My initial message pointed out that I like history, but if you don't my recommendations won't be as much use to you as those that others might suggest. What kinds of things are you looking for when you travel? John
