3 months... each country in the EU

Post Wed Mar 01, 2006 7:11 pm

Hi everyone, my name is Mike. Come September I will be trying my luck in Europe and backpack there. Been trying to find out if it is less than 90 days you can stay with a passport in each country, or all of them combined of 90 days or less. I havent received a straight answer from anyone... Its so gray area..

Thank you.

I'm reasonably certain it's not for the whole lot combined. I knew loads of people when I was backpacking that were drifting around Europe for more than 3 months. I did exactly three, so I couldn't tell you for sure.

Depends on which country. Most of western Europe is part of the Schengen agreement which means 90 days - for all the countries. Most eastern european countries do this individually, so you could spend 90 days in each of those countries.

Thanks, that helps me out a lot. Another question now I guess :P Is it relatively to find work under the table? I have enough to go for a year without working, but I want to for the experience. I don't really want to be on vacation for the whole time.

Hey Mike
You are only suppose to stay in europe with a canadian passport for only 3 months. But seriously, those europeans don't care. My girlfriend lived in Italy for over 6 mths and no one said anything. I am planning on leaving for europe in the middle of April for over 6 months and I am NOT worried. As for working under the table it is totally possible but the only thing is that you will be going in the off season. If you want to work in the nightclubs the main tourist season is at the beginning of May. The end of September will be great if you want to travel for the winter and then work in April give or take. A couple of websites that you may want to hit for jobs can be found on the "jobs abroad bulletin". Just start surfing the net for work in either Spain, Italy, France etc. I found a job in Greece in no time at all. Are you planning on going by yourself? Where are you planning on visiting? Europe is amazing and I am sure that you will love it!! I know I did and I CAN'T wait to go back... :D

Might be good to contact any friends in those countries mwelk so you are not alone the whole time, having friend(s), especially at the beginning of your trip, will help you adjust to the shock of being in a totally different culture and give you people to enjoy yourself with straight away to stop you feeling homesick. How long are you travelling for? Where are you going first? You have any people to meet near the start of your adventure? :)

Going for a year or so. If I can get away with it. I have some people I will be meeting up with in a few places yeah. Should be fun. I can't wait. We'll see how it goes. Starting in Scotland/Northern England.

Another question. Do I need proof that I have a roundtrip ticket? or can I buy a one way?

You should be able to buy a one way, although other members may inform you otherwise so don't hold me to that  Good place to start, as they speak the language, almost :P. Hostels in scotland/england are relatively expensive compared to many places but the uk is definately worth spending time in. Scottish highlands are good and Edinburgh is great, Glasgow not so good. Northern England, Manchester is a good party city, North York Moors and Lake District have stunning scenary.

Have you met these people before? and do you trust them or have specific plans? Be careful and enjoy yourself 8)
