Hi all! Hoping someone with a little more financial savvy can advise on this one. My company automatically enrolls all employees into a 401(k) plan, unless I opt out.
I'm here on a
TN visa and intend to return to Canada after a couple of years. Should I take advantage of the 401(k) while I'm here? Will I even be able to take advantage of it when I leave?
Any and all advice is welcome.
thanks!

I'm in a similar situation, my company automatically enrolls everyone for the 401K plan. I called fidelity and opted out this week. If I remember correctly, our HR said that if I leave the company and there's less than 5K in the 401K plan, I have no choice but to take it out or transfer it to another company's plan.
I'm not getting into this 401K plan until I know I will be staying here in the US for good, then again thats just me.

It really doesn't matter how long you'll stay in the U.S. for.
Here are some investment thoughts, take advantage of them if you desire.
You can benefit by taking advantage of the 401K in the following ways:
1. If your company matches your contributions (many companies do this), you'll be saving more than the amount you're contributing.
2. You will get a tax benefit for the contribution when you file your U.S. income tax.
3. If you leave this company (with < 5K), simply open a IRA account with your bank or investment firm (ie. Ameritrade) and transfer the money into that account.
4. If you move back to Canada and need to liquidate the account, simply do so.
Does anyone else have any ideas or thoughts. This is a very good thread for us to learn from each other.
