Accountant wanting to move to US

Post Tue Apr 21, 2009 3:05 am

I have been reading this forum but have now joined to ask a few questions. My husband and I want to move to the US permanently. Will this be possible? I know about the TN visa, however it is kind of restricted as you are only allowed up to 3 years if I'm right?

What other options do we have? We do have family but it's fourth preference and would take years.

Another question, is it relatively easy to find a job as an accountant - obviously taking into account that your employer knows you would only be there for 3 years max?

given the economy at the moment, it's not easy to find a job anywhere as anything!

Why do you want to move to the US?

You can go in as TN-1 as an accountant if you can find an employer willing to sponsor you, it is "temporary" however it can be renewed (or rather, re-granted) indefinitely provided you can satisfy CBP or USCIS that the stay is still temporary.

I think your problem is more likely to be finding an employer given the economy and also there are differences in accounting methods (e.g. because of Sarbanes-Oxley) and obviously the tax laws are different.
Steve.
