Sounds like the same situation as my parents!

I'm trying to get German citizenship, but the hold up is that my parents became canadians with their parents, when they moved to Canada in the 50's even though they were children.

The problem is that to become Canadian at that time they had to give up or renounce their other citizenships. I think the only way to get it back is to try and 're-claim' lost citizenship which could be a lengthy process. I don't know how it works for the Netherlands, if it's easier than Germany, but it's worth looking into for sure!

Let us know if you find anything else out.

Hello,
Both my parents are Portuguese and I was born in Canada and I have dual citizenship. I have two passports and I started out at the Portuguese Embassy.
Although you are talking about the Dutch authorities and the countries are different: I hope this helps.

October,

If your wife became a Canadian citizen before the age of 18, she may still be a Dutch citizen.

Both my parents came to Canada as kids and became citizens before the age of 18, therefore I was able to gain Dutch citizenship as my Dad was still considered a citizen (I believe it only applies to fathers, not mothers, I don't know why that is).

I went through the Dutch Consulate in Toronto (http://www.dutchconsulate.toronto.on.ca/). They were very helpful. They send a questionnaire by email to help me figure out my eligibility. I now have dual Canadian/Dutch citizenship and it is wonderful!!

Good luck!

The first thing you need to do is go and speak someone from the families office. They should be able to help and give you info on what needs to be done. What visa did you come to the U.K. on? Did you marry since you have been in the U.K.? I myself am a canadian married to a soldier. The first visa that I was given was whilst still in Canada waiting to come over was a 2 year entry clearance visa. A month before this ran out I needed to apply for an indefinite leave to remain visa, which I now have. It was around £360 I had to pay. It might be worth you calling immigration the number is 08702410645, they may be able to help. I sent mine thru the post but you may want to go up to the office in person, it is more expensive but may be easier in your situation. Which garrison are you currently in? I'm currently in Bordon Hampshire if you need any help.

After 15 years of living in Canada with her parents, your wife obtained Canadian citizenship? That took a long time... My sister was born in Holland in '73 (to my Dutch mother & and Scottish father) but never opted to get her Dutch Citizenship (the twit). Back in '97 I went to Holland to live with my mom for a year, we went to the immigration offices (in Utrecht I believe, can't remember spelling) and after a bit of a run around they said I could get my Dutch citizenship. I only ended up staying in Holland for two months, so I didn't apply for citizenship. But at least they said I COULD obtain it and that was in '97.

Persistance is what counts.

Hey, I just found this post via google and I am in a similar situation.

My grandparents are Dutch and moved to BC in 1957. I don't know the status of their citizenship, but I know that they have gone back there a lot for visits and I have a lot of relatives that still live in Holland.

So here are my questions:

Would my mother be eligible for dual citizenship since both her parents are Dutch? Assuming she does get her dual citizenship would I be able to acquire the same kind of dual citizenship since I would technically have a Dutch mother? I'm 21 so I don't still fit into the minor category and I have not lived in Holland at any point in my life (yet).
