Advice for a Canadian who wants to study engineering in UK

Post Wed Apr 18, 2007 4:20 am

Hello everybody,

I would like to ask for your advice about doing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Civil Engineering form a UK university. I am a Canadian, and I already did my first undergraduate engineering degree in another field from a North American university. However I really like Civil Engineering as well as traveling, and that is the reason why I am interested in doing a BEng, BS or MS in Civil Engineering from a UK school. I have already tried checking all kinds of rankings of the engineering schools but I could not get much info. I would greatly appreciate if you could help me with the following questions:

- Which universities in UK have well known Civil Engineering departments? As mentioned above I would like to start an international career, and UK graduates are known to be one of the most exportable. Which schools do the large companies tend to recruit the students from?

- The schools that I have checked out are very expensive compared to Canadian universities. The fees for international students studying in UK is pretty high. Are there any schools in UK that give Canadians tuition waiver (the same tuition as UK, European resident)?

- If you did take the Civil Engineering program in UK did you like it? Was it practical or more of a theory? (at a BEng, BS or MS levels)

-Also most universities want to students to spend at least 2 years towards BEng degree at their institution despite teh fact that I have taken most of the curricular part time in Canada. Are there any Canadian who managed to transfer to a UK university without any issues? and if yes then which school?

Again thank you very much for your help.

I can only anwser to one of your question:
"The schools that I have checked out are very expensive compared to Canadian universities. The fees for international students studying in UK is pretty high. Are there any schools in UK that give Canadians tuition waiver (the same tuition as UK, European resident)?"

you will have to pay the fees for international students , there is no way around it but with a student visa you can work for a maximum of 20 hours/week

I have no advice, but agree with Joanne on the fees issue. I am paying the overseas fees for my MA program and it is double that of UK/EU citizens. I am also a EU citizen, but you have to reside here for three years to get the resident rate.

Good luck!
