Advice on Fashion Industry related work visas

Post Fri Nov 12, 2010 5:31 pm

Hi Everyone,
I would really appreciate advice and insight into my current situation, I’ve been wrecking my brains online and been doing research on working in the US/Visas for the past couple of weeks, but the process is so complex and subjective that I feel as though I still have no idea what to do, so please, if you read this, give me some input if you can.

I’ve been dating a dual citizen, Canadian and American for the past 5 years (3 years long distance) and he is currently in the US for school. He has only ever lived in Canada for 2 years during his undergrad years and is born and raised in the states, he is Canadian because his Mother’s side is from Toronto.

I’m from Hong Kong, however I’m Canadian as well and have been in Canada for the past 5 consecutive years. I have a BA degree in Political Science and History from a top Canadian university and am currently completing a diploma in Fashion Management and have had many internships and P/T jobs in the fashion industry. I plan on working as either as a buyer/merchandiser/sales in the fashion industry.
Both my boyfriend and I will be done school in a couple months and I’m looking to relocate to the US because we are very much in love and no longer want to do the long distance thing anymore.

I’ve been researching work visas and it looks like I do not qualify for the TN visas since fashion industry related jobs are not in the occupations they list, therefore I was wondering, when looking for a job and speaking to possible employers, what visa should I be looking towards? Am I currently only eligible for the H1-B visa?

I would really appreciate all the advice and insight I can get, since this is all fairly new to me, I was wondering if there are others who are in a similar position as me or who are looking to work in fashion (Not as a fashion model…). Looking forward to hearing what everyone thinks I can do… I’m pretty much willing to do anything to live and work in the States to be with my boyfriend.
