Advice please!

Post Fri Nov 28, 2008 2:43 am

Hi! I'm trying to sort things out here and am having a difficult time. Hoping that someone could shed some light on everything for me!

I'm hoping to travel to the UK to live and work with my 1 year old daughter, and am wondering what I should do.

My father and his parents were all born in Scotland(grandmother now deseased). My father moved over to Canada when he was 3-4 years old and only holds a Canadian passport, but has a birth certificate from Scotland. I have 2 questions I guess, the first being,

I was told I could apply for an Ancestry visa based on my father being born in Scotland. I'm wondering what that would mean for my daughter. Would I need a seperate application to bring her with me? What application would I need? Also, I was wondering what I would need to have ready before I applied for this visa? (i.e. money saved up,certificates, payslips, job offers) And do I need to apply based on my father being born in the UK or my grandfather, or both?

My second part is, Ive been reading and saw that I may be able to apply for a british passport based on my father being born in Scotland. Is this right? And how would I go about doing that? And what would that mean for my daughter coming with me? And would I be able to work in the UK with having just a british passport? Or would I still need a visa? Also, Im not sure if this would make a difference(I cant tell so far) but my father and mother were not married when I was born. They married within the year after.

Thank you to anyone who can help me! It's very much appriciated!

Hi there,

You are actually eligible for Right of Abode- Ancestry visas are only for UK-born grandparents (myself and my wife's case). This doesn't entitle you to a passport right away, but a lot less hurdles to clear. For ROA, you'l still aply in the same fashion as for a visa, except you are exempt from the biometrics (fingerprints and appointment-making).

I'm not 100% on the process with your child, but I'm sure it can be done via the same site:

Technically your child would be eligible for the Ancestry Visa, but being one year old that's obviously not going to apply here.

I hope this sheds a little light in your research.

Thanks, it does help a little bit! But I've read that because I was born after January 1st 1983 (I was born in 1984) to a father who is a british citizen, that I am automatically a british citizen by decent.is this correct? And if it is, and I applied for a british passport and recieved one.what visa would I need to apply for to bring my daughter with me? Thanks so much!
