After 6 month visit to US, can I make casual visits?

Post Thu Aug 11, 2011 7:24 am

If I spend 6 months in the US (snowbird), can I then visit the States again casually for visits and short trips soon after? Or will I be denied entry? I'm thinking of doing an Alaska cruise next spring, and it will be after my 6 month stay in Florida. And in general, if I had to go to the States for a wedding or funeral some time, would this be permitted?

How hard is it to get an extension of the 6 month stay, while you're int he States?

As long as you have CLEAR and documented residence in canada, you will be fine. You may need to fiel a form or 2 with IRS if you are in US more than 183 days in a calendar year.

If you have spent 6 months and are statying in US, you need, before the time expires, to send I-539 for extension. Not usually granted, and wouldn't help you in the situations you describe. Leave before 6 months.
