Alberta EMT-A = USA EMT-?

Post Tue Mar 23, 2010 8:14 pm

Hey all,

I've just finished my training as an EMT-A in Alberta and am wondering what the equivalent certification would be in the US? Is it EMT-Basic, or EMT-Intermediate? In my training I can administer 7 or 8 medications, apply 12 lead ECG (Read Lead II), use an AED, basic and intermediate airways (OPA, NPA, LMA, Combitube, King Tube), and all advanced first-aid/oxygen therapy skills.

Also, if anyone knows of a link to where I can find what tests I'd have to write that would be great. Thanks!!

You'd be at the EMT-I (Intermediate) level. I just went through the opposite, coming to Alberta as a US EMT-Paramedic and getting certification up here. Most of the states (44 I think) use the national registry, once you get certified with them, you can apply with a specific state for a license to practise without any testing. Think ACOP on a national level...(yes lots of BS and silly testing procedures to go through) google the national registry of EMT's and you'll find their site, this BB doesn't want me to link it directly. If theres anything else I can help with, just let me know.

Cory, I am taking EMT paramedic classes now in the US. I may be looking to move back to Alberta in the future. How difficult was it for you to get reciprocity certified in Alberta? I'm just wondering what it will all entail to switch my ceritfications over to canadian requirements. Thank you.
