Am I stuck as a TN for a year, or can I switch while on it?

Hey guys,

You've been very helpful before... I have a question. While I'm on a TN visa, can I apply for a J1 or a H1B visa? Or am I stuck with the TN for a year? I'm asking because next year, I'll be interviewing for jobs that need J1 or H1B visas, and I'll (hopefully) be on my second TN by then, and I want to be sure it's ok for me to switch from the TN without waiting for it to expire...

Your employer can apply for change of status on I-129.

My son who went a one-year TN July 26, 2008 has his TN now to July 2012. He also has his H1B number and under process. All done by the company's lawyer, a California Supreme Court Lawyer.
