America working in Canada

Post Sat Jan 21, 2012 7:37 pm

I'm an American citizen who has worked in the states for 20 years, but who for the past 20 years has worked in Canada (while living in the states) under NAFTA and has paid cpp for those 20 years. Does anyone know whether it will be cpp or SS that pays my pension when I retire? Do I have any say in this? Which will pay more?

You will collect BOTH CPP (for 20 years of Cdn work) and SS (for 20 years of US work).

Unfortunately, as it stands now, your SS will be cut back by a formula called WEP, because of your Cdn "pensions" (CPP and private).

Techncially, the companies you worked for will pay your pension. SS and CPP are government retirement benefit plans, not pensions.
