American friend wants to move in Canada

Post Thu Jul 30, 2009 7:47 am

Hello all,

I know this forum are especially for Canadians who wants to move abroad, but I would like to take a chance and ask my question here, because I have hard time to find an answer. Here the situation:

I have an American friend, 23 years old who is actually visiting Montreal. He just fell in love with the city and he would like to stay here more longer to learn French (He's ready to stay 1 year in Montreal). My friend just wants to go to school to take couple of French lessons. Here my questions:

1. How long can an American stay in Canada without any visa? I read somewhere it was 6 months, can somebody confirm?

2. Can my American friend take some French classes at the university or any other schools? Or did he really need to get a Student visa first?

3. I have checked some universities for him and tuitions are really expensive just for couple of French classes. I read it's because he would be a foreigner student and the fees are way more expensive. Does anybody know a school or any place where he would possible to pay decent "fees"....my friend just want to learn French, nothing more. He does not need to apply to a University program or such thing.

thx all

1. Six months.

2. Part-time study for recreational purposes is permitted as a visitor.

3. Try the Alliance Francaise.

It's not particularly hard to get the student entry as an American, ask at the college or whatever.
Steve.
