Ancestry Visa - Name Swap/Change - Visa Successful

Post Thu Jul 22, 2010 5:04 pm

Hello,

First I would like to thank everybody on these boards for their posts - I am 90% through the process of applying my UK Ancestry Visa and these boards have been of immense help!

I have acquired long form birth certificates for myself, my father, and my grandfather (UK Born), but am facing a dilemma. Between the time that my grandfather was born and when he had my father, he switched his middle name with his first name, thus the name on his birth certificate and my father's birth certificates are different (or at least in a different order).

Does anybody know if this is acceptable when applying for a UK Ancestry Visa? Should I attempt to acquire my grandparent's marriage certificate for some potential indication that he changed his name? Or because it is just a swap between his first and middle name, do you think that I will be fine.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Acceptable or not, you have no choice but to provide the birth certs.

I would not worry about it.

Thanks for your response.

Just a quick follow up to my original question. This is my experience with my application.

1) Submitted online application with a note that "My Grandfather swapped his middle and first name."

2) Went to get biometrics done on August 31st in Vancouver. Sent off my application immediately. The application included:

a) my long form birth certificate (BC, Canada) - $35 or so - took a week or two to arrive
b) my father's long form birth certificate (BC, Canada) - $35 or so - took a week or two to arrive after including a letter from my father authorizing me to get a copy
c) my grandfather's long form birth certificate (really just a certified, fancy photocopy out of their birth registry) - $8 or so - took 2-3 weeks to arrive
d) a copy of my application
e) my passport
f) a photo, taken at a photo place to their specifications (white background, 45mm x 35mm, non-smiling, etc.)
g) a printout of my online banking for the past 3 months of both my chequing and savings accounts with the first page stamped and signed by the customer service person at my bank with their direct contact information. Each subsequent page was signed, with their name printed, and their phone number. I had $7000CAD available, but have read that as little as $3000CAD is acceptable.
h) copy of my email confirming payment
i) photocopies of birth certificates, as I wanted the originals back
j) return prepaid waybill for DHL to receive my documents back

3) On September 9th, I received confirmation that they had recieved it, via email. It was delivered on the 2nd, so don't worry if they don't confirm receipt quickly.

4) On September 13th, I received confirmation that my visa had been issued.

5) On September 14th, my visa was received by DHL, including all of my application documents with the exception of my photo and printed application.

One interesting thing is that my visa was issued for the full 5 years, instead of the 3 years indicated in my application. As well, I made an error in my application in that I wrote my intent to stay as "4 years", but the date that I would leave as 3 years from the date that I intended to enter.

Let me know if anybody has any follow up questions as to the process, as I enjoy giving back.

Hi,

great to see your post as I am in a similar situation with my Grandfather who changed his name. I too cannot find a name change form and hope that what I have will be enough. Also, what birth certificate did you have for your Grandfather? Did you order it online for the Register of Births? Any other tips or tricks? My biometrics are on Dec 29.
