Ancestry VISA only for men?

Post Tue Jun 14, 2005 6:33 pm

I mentioned to my aunt that I have thought about moving to the UK in a couple of years via an ancestry VISA. My father is an immigrant, came as a kid with his parents and siblings. My mother's father also came over as a kid.

It was my understanding that if my grandparent was an immigrant, I should be able to get an ancestry VISA. My aunt said she too wanted to do that, as her parents and grandparents are all British immigrants but told me that the fine print reads only males (sons and grandsons of immigrants) can use this. She tried and was denied on that count!!!???!!!

Is this at all true? I'm female. Any other females come across this?

There were sexist issues with visas and citizenship in the past. Due to a change in law, I was able to get citizenship because my mother was born in England and I was born in 1962. I have a British passport now. Others with a British mother get "Right of Abode". Gender of the applicant is not an issue. I obtained the right of abode before I was eligble for citizenship.

The criteria are:
You will qualify if you can show that:

you are a Commonwealth citizen
you are aged 17 or over
you have a grandparent who was born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man (see note below)
you have a grandparent who was born in what is now the Republic of Ireland before 31 March 1922 (see note below)
you are able to work and intend to do so in the UK, and
you can support yourself and any dependants, and live without needing any help from public funds.

OH Good! I had never come across anything mentioning sex in my investigations, just the criteria you listed. I'm glad it's changed!

Thanks for the info. ;)
