Ancestry Visa - Question on Timing

Post Mon Oct 03, 2011 5:11 pm

Hi there!

I have recently been issued my UK ancestry visa, and couldn't be more excited to move abroad. At this time, my departure date is a little up in the air as i am currently employed in Toronto but don't have a job nailed down in London, where i intend to move.

SO does anyone know if there is a certain time frame within which i have to activate the visa? I thought i read somewhere that i have to use it within three months of the issue date. But now i cannot locate that information again, and i'm beginning to panic a little! Any information/links that anyone could share on this topic would be incredibly helpful and much appreciated.

Also i wanted to put it out there, that I found this process very easy and straightforward. As such i'd love to help out anyone who has questions regarding the application process. I found this forum helpful when applying and would be pleased to pay it forward. feel free to get in touch if you have questions!

Thanks and looking forward to hearing back! :D

You don't have to "activate" your visa. Your visa is valid from the date of issue until the date of expiry. It's normally recommended to travel within the first month following the date of issue, especially if you wish to apply for ILR after your five years in the UK.

If ILR is not a priority, then you can enter the UK when convenient for you but you have to keep in mind that the expiry date will remain the same so you may have less time in the UK as a result of your late entry. Also if you wait too long, Immigration Officers may ask you to show them that you still have the funds to maintain yourself in the UK.
