Any canadians in Melbourne or canadian bars?

Post Thu Sep 20, 2007 10:10 pm

Hello all,
I just moved over here from scotland but i am originally a ontario native. I am living in north melbourne and trying to find work which is proving difficult.
I was wondering if there were any young canadians like myself wanting to go for a drink sometime after all canadians get on with canadians so well.
Also does anyone know if there are any canadian bars or hockey bars in melbourne?
thanks and have a nice day

Hi, we're also in Australia but we're in Brisbane so not close enough to meet up I'm afraid.

I'd have a look at this site:

The Canuck Abroad place can be good for finding Canadians, unfortunately they are not that many of us here. If you look at the link I gave you can find out if there are any meet ups around your area. The site is mostly people from the UK but there are people on there from elsewhere too. I've met lots of people from the UK that have moved over and found the majority to be very friendly. I know they're not Canadian but they've been through the process and know what it's like to have to make friends and settle in again.

I don't know about the bars but I would suggest calling the ice hockey rink in Melbourne and asking them. They might now of a place where the regulars like to go.

I am here from Vancouver and staying in Dandenong North 25 min from the city. I too am finding it pretty difficult to find employers who will hire someone for 6 months on the visa restriction :( and unfortunately there is not a similar area of work to my previous Canadian job. I moved here with my boyfriend (he's Aussie) and now he is working full time and I am in complete social shock. I too would like friends Canadian or not :) But I am in definate need of a hockey fix so if you find somewhere please please let me know!
Thanx

Here's a link for their professional hockey team in Melbourne:
http://www.melbourneice.com/
They have games you could go and watch. Or if you have cable you can watch the odd game on there too.

For meeting people you could try this:
http://www.canadaclub-vic.org.au/

You can also try the link I posted in the last message.

I would try to get involved in any sort of sports or hobbies that you enjoy. You'll find you can meet people that way. It does take a lot of effort to make new friends. I'm finding it difficult as well but it is easier to meet other moms with kids like me.

Hey Guys,

I'm not there yet, but I'm planning to make a preliminary visit early next year. I would also like to move out there, but hearing that the job situation isn't that great is a little disappointing. I currently live in Edmonton, Alberta. Work for Telus as a telecom tech, you think I'll have trouble finding work out there?

there seems to be quite a lot of tech support work so I wouldn't worry too much. If you know when you are coming it may be best to apply and try and get a job before you get here.

Hey there fellow Canadians,

I am a newbie to Melbourne just arrived here from Vancouver a few weeks ago. I am disparately needing to socialize. anyone up for grabbing a coffee or beer sometime soon?

Hey there all you Canadians in Melbourne,
That city is nightclub and restaurant heaven.
If you pick up a copy of Thursday's Age newspaper there's a section called the Green Guide where you'll find most nightclub and band venues listed.
Grab it, read it and get yourselves out there.
Aussies like Canadians so make sure you let them know your Canadian and not from the USA, eh!
Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
