Any Cdn Meet ups/ Friends Perth?

Post Fri Jan 15, 2010 4:29 am

Hi,
We just moved to Perth from Ontario (Oakville) and are looking for some Canadian Meet-ups/ friends.

We have three children 7,11,and 13 and would love to meet other families.

We live in the Ocean Reef area (NOR).

Hope to meet some friends :)

I see no one's answered you yet. We're not in Brisbane but I know of someone who sometimes does Canadian meet ups. She doesn't frequent this site but she uses the British Expats site. Mostly it's british people that have moved to Australia but there's also a growing following of Canadians on there too.

Here's one of the Canadian discussions. Today they mentioned organizing another Canadian meetup. You could always contact them that way. Here's a link to the thread.

If you scroll up a bit you'll see where they were discussing doing a meet-up. Also this thread has been going on for a couple of months so you could always go back to the beginning and have a read. You will probably have to sign up in order to post though (it's free).

Alternatively there might be a meet up group a www.meetups.com
I had a quick look but could only find an American group.

Your last resort is always the hockey rink. If my memory is correct there might be two in Perth.

If you ever want to watch a game you can check out the Superleague (link at the top left). That's the highest level they have here and would be sort of like Junior A in Canada or maybe a bit higher.

If anyone is interested in playing there's links for that too, or also this one:

I was hoping there was a message board on one of those sites but I can't seem to see one.

Your best bet for meet ups is to contact Dorothy. She's live there for a few years now and seems to do that sort of thing.

You can see her email there on the right (not sure if it's totally current though). If you sign up there you can always send her a private message (PM). You need to make 3 posts on the site before it'll let you do that though.

***Just a side note to say that yes I do mention that site a lot but only because there's far more traffic there. I still use this site to help out when I can but most of the time I follow the other one.

This isn't in response to your post for meet-ups, but I'm moving to the Sunshine Coast in July from Oakville. How are you finding the transition to Oz?

Hi there cdn_perth. As Comet says, a bunch of us are getting together this weekend for coffee and lunch in Freo. You are more than welcome to join us if you like. So far we have 3 of us coming for sure and hopefully 2 more. It would be great if we could get a big turnout.

I'm just up the road from you in Butler, so not too far at all. You can get in touch with me either via British Expats (Comet gave the links) or here. Like Comet said, if you post more than 3 times on BE you can send me a private message and I'll send you back details of when and where we're meeting.

Oops, should have said we moved here from Burlington. OH is originally from Bronte. (not the posh part, though)

Hi Cnd_Perth,

Yes, we had a Canadian meet up in January in Freo and a great day.

I am also from Oakville, moved to Perth Dec 28, 2009 so just a few weeks before you. Also have two boys 10 and 12. We are in Wembley (also NOR).

If you get this message post back and we will figure out how to meet. I am also on the British Expat's site where you can DM/PM me. (look up the Canadians in Australia thread Comet555 gave earlier). We should plan to get together for coffee once the kids are back in school.

Hope you kids settled well into school. We are enjoying this first term break and going a little more exploring.

Hi Everyone,

This is more of a question than a reply. Seeing that you are all living in Perth, Australia.. I decided to address my questions to you guys.

We are currently living in Scarborough, ON (GTA) and my husband is being offered a job in Perth. Belmont in particular. If the plan push thru, we will be moving with our 4-yr-old son and a newborn daughter. My question is, is raising kids in Perth almost similar to raising them here in Toronto? Are there affordable music classes, dance class, martial arts, swimming, art, gymnastics and those kinds of stuff in the area? Are there drop-in playplaces? Home daycare? Is having a nanny affordable? Our son is supposed to attend JK in September, so I'm a little worried for him.. if he'll be able to adjust well to this move. And our baby daughter will have to receive the rest of her immunizations there. Do you know if the immunizations there are the same as here in Canada? Any tips and advise will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!
