Any idea on the avg. price for dual-status tax returns?

Post Tue Apr 14, 2009 1:32 am

Hi there,
I have a question which I'd appreciate if someone here can help me with.
I moved from US to Canada last year. Since the previous years I filed 1040s in the US and my move is intended to be permanent, this means that I officially moved my tax-home back to Canada.

So this is what I need to do:
- File dual-status in the US (1040, 1040NR, 1040C)
- File a pro-rated T1 in Canada
- Claim the relevant tax credits for the one saving account I have in the US
- Deduct some work-related expenses in Canada
- Hopefully, deduct the moving expenses in the US return (since the move was work-related).
- Deduct CPP/EI maybe? since last year I ended up paying both, Medicare/US Social Security and Canadian Pension Plan/EI.

And that's it, no rrsp, no 401K, no dependants, etc.

I've read a lot about what I need to do but I don't feel really confident to do the returns myself. I've asked around for prices for such service and a company with very good reputation in Vancouver quoted me around $1600. Others have quoted me between $400 to $600 but I don't have a good feeling about it, since I don't think they really have experience on this area.

This is my first time I hire professionals to file my taxes, so I'm kind of lost here. Does $1600 CAD sound like a normal figure for something like this or should I keep shopping around?
My priority is to file my taxes correctly at any price, but I certainly wasn't expecting to pay such high amount!

btw, I know I'm a little late for my US return but I'm expecting to get a refund so I should be ok.

thanks in advance for any advice,
-L

Thanks. I should probably give a call to Serbinski to see their rates. I was hoping I could find something local but shouldn't be a a big deal.
