Any one been to Derby Line, VT for TN recently

Post Wed Feb 25, 2009 3:07 pm

Hi,
I am planning to go to the Derby Line, VT POE for my TN visa.
This will be my second time and was wondering if any one has either good or bad experiences to share with.
I am planning to attend on a Saturday evening after 5:00 PM.
Is this the right time?
Is there any other POE that is better than Derby Line?
Any comments will help me greatly.
Thanks,

Been various people on here in the past who've had problems at Derby Line, apparently the guy who does them there is a bit of a jobsworth. Based on what people have said it seems he takes the advice in the CBP field manual very seriously, which means you could have a problem if you're entering as a Systems Analyst or a Management Consultant.

Other TN-1 categories are pretty straightforward so as long as you've got your degree, job offer letter, etc. you should be okay.

Derby Line is a bit of a mixed bag -- some people have had good experiences there while others, as the OP mentioned, have not. If it's not too far out of the way for you, you might want to try the Champlain POE (I-87 in New York/Aut. 15 in Quebec). Many people I know from the Montreal area prefer it since the officers there seem to be knowledgeable and consistent, at least more so than at Derby Line. I don't know anything about the Highgate Springs crossing.

Thanks for your replies.
I am a software engineer. Steven, did you come accross any bad memories from people if any who attended at Derby Line POE for Software Engineer?
Champlain is not far for me either.
Thanks for your input.

My wife and I have been using Derby Line since we converted from the J1/J2 to the TN back in 2006. We have never had any problems with processing there. It's always gone smoothly. We're both meteorologists, which matches the TN listing perfectly, so that might be part of our success. I'd be processing there again this year, except my usual ride up from Connecticut can't do it this year, so I'm processing at Ottawa International Airport instead.

As for the time you're going, I've always chosen to go on a weekday, and during normal business hours. That way, if there are any problems, you know that your employer is likely to be there, and can be contacted by the Inspector for any questions they might have.

It's always Systems Analyst or Management Consultant because of what it says in the field manual.

I guess when you have a small degree of authority it is important to take it as far as possible. I returned the next day, got another officer and was OK.

May I ask why you were rejected the first time?

He did not like some of my documentation, for whatever reason it was offer letter. But he was a complete clown from the get-go. From the minute I walked through the door there was no way I was getting that Visa.

I think it's some sort of social grouping phenomenon, I remember a freight forwarder I used to deal with telling me this years ago, i.e. at every POE there is always one person who thinks it's their job to be an unhelpful PITA.

There's one at Sweetgrass, most of the people there are okay but just that one guy who comes across as though he trained with the Hitler Youth.
