Any possible problems using One-Way flight into UK?

Post Sun Apr 13, 2008 7:27 pm

I've got a vacation planned that is going to see my partner and I fly into the UK (Glasgow, specifically), staying for just over a week, then heading to mainland Europe for a few more weeks. As of right now we're planning on using one-way tickets into Glasgow to leave ourselves flexible on where we return to Canada from and exactly how long we stay.

I've done a bunch of online searches and spoken with a few friends that have travelled to Europe and I haven't gotten any feedback that says I should run into problems, but I also haven't gotten any feedback that says it definitely isn't a problem.

Can anyone here offer some insight?

Many thanks.

Hi,

Usually if your traveling overseas you need to have a return flight booked. Most countries will not let you in unless you have a return ticket back to your home country. This is to help control the prospect of illegal immigrants. You always have the option of booking your flights and leaving the return date open!

Hope this helps and enjoy your holidays,

If you have proof that you are leaving (ie. you have a ticket to elsewhere in Europe) you shouldn't have any issues getting in to the UK. But the next country that you head to will want to know when you are leaving and you will need to give them proof.
One option is that you just book a return flight, but keep it super flexible so that you can change the date if you need to. Usually you can get one free change on a ticket anyways.
Have fun,
Allyssa

Have you actually been able to find a one wy ticket that is cheaper than round trip? I've never seen one.

If you fly with Zoom they are like Westjet in that area. Your return is actually just 2 one ways so it is about 1/2 the price when you fly 1/2 the distance. I don't know what other airlines are like.

I don't know what the rules are but I have a friend who arrived in the UK in December without a return ticket. She has left the UK a few times to travel around Europe and she hasnt had any problems getting back in. Maybe she's just been lucky.

For cheap flights, you can also check out

Have a return flight, even if you just reserve one. Immigration is getting really tough on visitors - even from their allies. I come into the UK quite often (from the States). I was detained on my last visit. Their problem was that even though I had a return flight booked, I was staying for 6 weeks, and this was a red flag for them. Take bank statements, contact info for the place you're staying, and an itinerary if you can. It is really depressing being detained in a pen while you watch hundreds of others make their way through smoothly. I speak from experience.

I booked my one way through Itravel2000 and called back 4 times to talk to different agents about this question. They said that you definately don't need a visa to get into the country, and should have no trouble getting in on a one way ticket.
My sister said that it is often cheeper to buy a ticket returning to Canada from London when you're there.
My question: If you are on a 5 yr ancestry visa with the intention to stay, how can they expect you to purchase a return ticket?
Does anyone have a reliable source to contact? Not that I don't trust ITravel. . . .

Be aware that you might not be allowed to board the flight in Canada. I booked a one way ticket to Germany a few years ago, with the thought that I would buy the return ticket when I got there, as I planned to stay for the summer and wanted flexibility. I head off to Pearson and the airline would not let me board the plane! I had to purchase the return portion on the spot, at whatever ridiculous price was available.
