Oh, for goodness sakes.....
To ship an average house it is nowhere near 40-50k. The only way you could approach that total would be if you filled two 20 foot containers and also shipped a vehicle along with it (or a combo of vehicles and containers). I would also consider the fact that knowing the relocations are being paid for by a company could help escalate the costs if you know what I mean. Company moves sometimes include a relocation agent and assistance on the other end which would further add to the costs. When my husband was going through job interviews the relocation packages they were describing were very thorough, and I would not be surprised if what they described was 40-50k. However, we came without jobs (by choice) and so would have been paying for it ourselves so we opted to leave everything in Canada.
Also, I love the slight dig and your presumption that we might not be in the same league or something. I presume you think we are poor, which couldn't be farther from the truth. The fact is that we knew we were moving over shortly after we left university so we didn't bother replacing or getting expensive stuff. It had nothing to do with affording new stuff, in fact the money we saved was used to pay off two student loans in full and buy a house within 2 years of leaving school.
Without getting into salaries my husband is a senior mining engineer so does quite well and would certainly be in the league of those who get those generous packages you seem to go on about. I'm a teacher myself although by choice I'm not working and am staying home with the kids. We're fortunate that I don't need to work unless I really want to (which I will once they're in school).
Enough about that though.... I think you'll find that the average person
shipping a house (no car) over in a 20 foot container on their own it would be at the most more in the range of 15-20k. I'm not disagreeing that those 40-50k moves happen, it's just not going to happen for most people. When we had our quote it was about $15,000 for a 20 foot container which would have fit our entire 3 bedroom house and all the furniture without getting rid of any. This was in 2007 so it's not that long ago.
And about that other forum.... it's not an attempt to spam it but rather an attempt to get people more information. There is only so much traffic on this site and there are often interesting questions that get unanswered or very few responses. I found that "other" forum particularly helpful when we moved over as this board in particular was not as active back in 2006-2007. Not to say it's a fountain of activity now, but it has picked up a bit. Let's face it there are hardly any Canadians immigration to Oz compared to the amount from the
UK and the rest of the world. Why limit your answers to those coming from Canadians when you can ask questions from far more on another site. If this site had that kind of activity I never would have needed to look elsewhere.

I hate to burst your bubble, Comet, but I have known people who hadsubstantial belongings. Corporate clients... perhaps an unfamiliar area orfor you.

By the way, does every post of yours spam that other forum? A bit rude, no?Or does the site Admin(s) approve of this?
