Anyone been to Sestriere? Whats hot in Italy?

My boyfriend and I are travelling to europe in June. We have a timeshare booked for a week in Sestriere and are not sure whether to keep it. The main concern is travel to Turin so that we can catch a train to other main areas.
Would it be recommended to ditch the timeshare and backpack through Italy for the week, catching all the sites?
On such limited time, what areas of Italy would everybody recommend seeing?
