Applying for a UK visa while outside of Canada

Post Mon Aug 08, 2011 5:06 pm

Hi all,

I'm currently living and working in Bermuda; and am planning on moving to the UK in 2012. I qualify for the ancestry visa, however i'm not really sure on how to go about applying for it from here...

Since i'm a Bermudian resident, can I apply for the visa here in Bermuda, or do I need to be in Canada to apply?

Also, if I can apply from here, the thought of sending my passport with my supporting documents makes me extremely nervous, as i'll be without a passport as my visa gets processed, and unable to leave the island if I need to for whatever reason. Do you HAVE to send your original passport, or is it possible for me to send a notarized photocopy?

Would really appreciate any insight! Thanks!

You can apply from Bermuda as you're a resident there. And you'll have no choice but to submit your passport as they'll print your visa in it. You'll be passport less for a couple of weeks maximum. If you're not sure about them posting you back your passport and documents, you can ask if you can come back and collect them instead.
