Applying for citizenship..PLEASE HELP ASAP

Post Sun Feb 27, 2011 8:24 am

Ok, this is my situation. I am canadian and went to the Uk on an ancestry visa lasting 5 years. I lived and worked in Edinburgh for 3.5 years and was married to a british man while in Scotland. We then came to North America and travelled and spent in total 9 months away from the UK. I would now like to get a British passport but to be honest it is in order to accept a job offer in Spain.

I have read you can not leave the UK for more then 90 days in a 12 month period before applying for citizenship but of course I have done this.

I was born to a British Mother but she took Canadian citizenship 6 months before I was born (in 1979). So does anyone know the best way to go about getting a British Passport. I thought it would be fairly easy with a ancestry visa and also being married to a British Citizen but from reading website it seems like I need to go back to the UK for a year in order to apply. Someone please tell me it is not THAT hard??

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The fact that she took Cdn citizenship did not end her UK citizenship. However you may or may not have automatically been citizen depending on which parent was UK citizen, and when you were born.

All the UK passport sites have a breakdown of who is citizen, presumably you went thru these before claiming ancentry visa rather than true citizenship. Nothing has changed since then.

If you were not eligible for UK passport back then, you once agian are not and should have applied for one while living in UK. If you were eligible back then, then you still are, and simply need to apply for passport using C1 form, like anyone else, regardless of where you live.
