Appoint trustee in Canada to manage my RRSP?

Post Wed Nov 18, 2009 12:49 pm

I moved down to California about a year ago on a TN visa. Back in Canada, I have a large RRSP (actually a locked-in retirement account, or LIRA, but it's mostly the same thing) with RBC Direct Investing. I enjoy doing the trading and managing my self with it.

However, now that I'm down here, I'm severely restricted on the kinds of trades I can make. It's very frustrating.

About a year ago, there was a thread here where someone mentioned the possibility of appointing a trustee who lives in Canada, who could then make trades in the account without restrictions.

Has anyone here done that? Any FAQ's, tips and tricks, do's and don't's? I'm thinking about asking a trusted relative to do this for me, if it's at all possible.

Thanks!

Rob, SHB,

There are cross-border investment managers who specialize in this arena, managing investments (RRSP, LIRA, RRIF etc)for expatriates.

Google "cross-border wealth management" and evaluate the alternatives.

PM me if you would like more information.
