Asian Canadian moving to Australia

Post Sat Dec 05, 2009 11:43 am

Hi Expats,

I am an Asian Canadian and will be working towards a Skilled - Independent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 175). English is my primary language and my profession is in Information Technology as a Systems Administrator. So the english requirement shouldn't be a problem for me and my occupational field is on the is on the Skilled Ocuppation List I believe.

My goal is to live in Australia for 2-4 years and travel across Australia and learn about the culture and experience the Australian life.

I understand that it moving to a different country will be difficult, visa approvals, settling in a new city/country and and seeking employment. I see it as a learning experience. I want to go there and see how people live and learn more about Australians. The internet will not provide me the same experience. Lets say this is a late quarter-life crisis.

Racism is a small concern to me. I have experienced it quite a bit in my youth but now at the age of 30, i've noticed less. I know i will run into anywhere i go, it doesn't bother me.

That being said, what city is good to start in?

I'm from Saskatchewan. Our cities are about 300K in population. I do not mind commuting to and from work. Though I understand it will be a challenge regardless. I am pretty laid back, i am more into pubs and coffee shops than night clubs.

How does one seek empoyment?

I will be searching for jobs on the internet and posting my resume/cv prior to moving and will continue the process after i arrive.

How was your experience as a Canadian when you arrived in Australia?

I'm looking for input good and bad. What did you like when you first arrived, and what difficulties/obstacles did you experience after shortly arriving?

Thanks in advance. :D

I'm a Chinese-Canadian in Melbourne. No worries for people of East Asian background here, I'd say there are more of us here as a percentage of total population than there is even in Toronto.

Unless you're a very high level executive, there's no point in posting your CV or applying for jobs until you're physically in Australia.

175 is meant to be permanent resident, not "come down here for 2-4 years". It also means that you have structure your finances as if you're moving down here permanently.

Hi Jimflea,

I appreciate the reply. I will be structuring my finances for permenant residence and registering for all of the paperwork that I need after getting there. I will be liquidating my assets and such.

In honesty, i will stay for a long time. I think i originally stated 2-4 because it is difficult to know what will happen in 2-4 years. So please disregard that portion.

From what i've read from this site and few other sites, it appears that Melbourne is an ideal city to move to. Are there also other cities you would recommend?

Thanks,

Hi magnum,

me and my husband, both are asian canadian, live in edmonton right now. we are recently consider to move to australia.

but the difficult thing is to get a work visa. we are thinking if we hold a travel visa staying in australia, how much possibility my husband can get a 457visa from employer who is willing to sponsor my husband?

my husband has 14years work experience in system analysis, currently be a senior consultant.

as i know that australian employer won't give a chance to hire a person who has not have a work permit in australia. so i am thinking another way, if i can get a student visa for master degree, at the meantime, my husband can get a student visa too, then he would have work permit for full time work.

once he has work permit, if it will add the chance to be hired, further possibly getting 457, or whatever he can have a permanent work permit staying in australia.

Hi Toriweiwei,

I'm not sure what will work, i'm pretty new to this.

In my situation, I'm applying to Australian Computer Society (ACS) to be recognized in Australia as an IT professional. Though my profession is listed on the SOL, it is not on the MODL/CSL list. Have your husband look through the Australian Computer Society website.

If you're not on the MODL/CSL list, you will probably be waiting for a LONG time for the 175 visa to be approved.

If you stick to the major cities in Australia, like Canada, racism is much less of an issue. You can't go wrong with Sydney or Melbourne to start.

If you want to expedite your move to Australia in the IT field I'd suggest you monitor the Sydney Convention Centre for upcoming IT events like CeBIT and fly out for a visit. You're more likely to find a receptive IT executive who might sponsor you or point you in the right direction. Shooting off resumes while in Canada with no work permit is very difficult.

Stop spreading your crap dannykool as all you do is read the news rather than think for yourself by living in Australia first and then forming your own opinion - but we've had this discussion before.

East Indians have been attacked everywhere, lots of attacks recently in Vancouver, especially since most of the ones here love joining gangs and selling drugs. Many of us would love the same response in Canada that has happened in Australia, tit for tat.
