Aussie mum going to Canada...

Post Sun Nov 02, 2008 11:23 am

I am an Australian mother with a Canadian fiance. He came over to Aus on a working visa and has to go back to Canada by the end of the year. I am hoping to be able to travel back with him. We have looked at a few options including getting married before we go but are not really sure if we should wait to get married in Canada.
Apparently it can take a month getting married in Aus, we just want the fastest easiest way of being together. We dont want to have to be in different countries. My daughter is 5years old and I want to enroll her into schooling but on a tourist visa I cannot. So we are not really sure what to do or if there are any other options.

We're kinda hoping to travel to Canada together in just over a month.
If anyone has any kind of input, I would love to hear it.
Thanks.
Cam.

He needs to sponsor you, you can apply through the Canadian High Commission in Canberra. http://www.cic.gc.ca/EnGLIsh/immigrate/ ... ly-how.asp

Apparently it is quicker to come into Canada as a visitor and apply for change of status, but I'd check with the High Commission and see what they say:

Have you been living together in Australia for a year or more? If so, he can sponsor you as his common-law spouse and you don't need to get married.

It takes a very very long time to do an "in-land" immigrant application, so if you were to go to Canada with your fiance, it could be up to 18 months or more before you can get a job, and before either you or your daughter will be eligible for provincial health care benefits.

check out http://roadtocanada.com forums for info. Lots of couples there with lots of info.
