Auto insurance in the UK

Post Mon Sep 08, 2008 2:31 pm

Hi guys . I hope this topic hasn't been covered in a recent post, 'cause I can't find one! I am going to Europe in about a month and will have an International Drivers Permit, issued from Canada. My question is . When I get there, if I buy a car, what kind of auto insurance in necessary, and where should I go to buy such insurance? Any info you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Your best bet is to get what is called 'Fully Comprehensive' insurance. This will cover you for most if not all situations.
Go to insurance websites which compare prices such as 'go compare' or 'confused' or actual companies such as 'Esure' I can't put actual hyperlinks in as I have not been a member long enough!
If you google them they should come up no worries.
If these cannot help they should direct you to companies that can.
Hope this is some help?

If you're going to the UK you really need the abstract from your current insurance company and any prior ones going back as far as you can get them.

Insurance agents in the UK do the insurance check in a different way than in Canada, there's a central database they use (this was to avoid fraud with the abstracts). You won't appear in it so you need all the paperwork from Canada, and it's a lot easier to get while you're in Canada than after you've left.
Steve.
