avoiding duty / tax / etc

Post Tue Mar 18, 2008 3:47 pm

I am a canadian living in vancouver. I am trying to order a $1500 headphone amplifier from an american company (it is also manufactured in the states, if that matters). I understand that if I just ship it here (to vancouver), I will get hit by duty and tax and whatnot. My girlfriend (a canadian citizen going to school in virginia) will be moving back for the summer in a month or so. If I send it to her and get her to bring it back will I be able to avoid some of these fees? What's my best bet here?

Thanks for any advice.
Tom

Duty will be zero-rated because of NAFTA, but you'll have to pay GST and PST. It would have to be considered part of her personal effects, Canada is quite tight on that, she'd have to declare it on CBSA Form B4 and it has to be in her possession for a year I think for it to be tax-exempt.
