Banking from abroad

Post Thu Jan 17, 2008 4:53 pm

Hi there,

I am likely moving to Ireland in the next year. I will go for anywhere from 1-5 years. I currently have a loan that will likely not be paid off before I go. How difficult will it be to pay it off from abroad? i.e. how hard is it to send money to my Canadian account from my Irish account? If you don't know exactly from Ireland, any comments from other countries would help too. Cheers!

I am not in Ireland, but check to see if the HSBC bank has a branch there ? They have the most banks globally and then you could move money between accounts in different countries easier.

We do automatic payments from a Canadian account and then a few times a year we do a big wire transfer to that account to top it up.

Hi Michelle,
Have been living in Ireland since 2005, just south of Kilkenny....Travel between Canada, California and Spain so kind of know the ropes.
In Ireland the banks do money drafts (money orders) for a small fee, and you can send them anywhere in the world, for any currency you want. I paid my car insurance for ICBC through them when I still had my car there in Canada, and also my storage space. Just make sure you get a copy of the draft that you can actually read, then keep it somewhere safe in case original gets lost! Good Luck!
