For the last few years I have been thinking about getting my British citizenship. I am in school right now and I hope to be able to go to Scotland for a couple years when I'm done and teach. I have looked everywhere for information but I cant find anything that gives a direct answer.

Maybe if someone could help it would be great. My Mum was born in Scotland in 1962 and I was born in Canada in 1987. I have no idea what forms to use or even where to start looking anymore.

If anyone has an answer, I would be very thankful. Smile

Just in case you were wanting to just try it out, before getting citizenship (and making things rather permanent) there is a working-holiday visa that people can get for the UK. Also if you are a certified teacher have you ever thought of working for Protocol Teachers? They arrange your visa and the whole bit. Then you work as a supply teacher as needed in the schools. I have a few friends who did that and loved it. They have set-ups in several UK cities and in Australia (I think).
Just thought I'd offer ideas.

Hi Dawn,

Because your mum was a British citizen when you were born, you automatically gained British citizenship at birth. If you would like to get your British passport all you need to do is provide proof of your lineage. I sent away for my passport and I included my mum's passport (with me on it) and her birth certificate and that was about it.

If you don't want your passport but still want some papers to help things along, I know you can send off for those.but I don't know much about that. I just went for the passport as it seemed the most sensible thing.

I can send you a website that answers pretty much everything you need to know and also has all the forms and fee info etc. I will PM it to you shortly.

If you are eligible for citizenship, then I would recommend that route. You are currently allowed to hold dual citizenship in Canada and the UK, so there is no reason not too.

If you go down the Visa route, and then decided to stay - you will have to pay for your Visa and then later for the Citizenship.

Also, British Citizenship allows you to work anywhere in the EU which might be handy if you get the travel bug!
