Behind the scenes at two remote border crossings

Post Thu Sep 17, 2009 3:24 pm

Another interesting read from Connect2Canada, wow.

•DHS planned to spend $31 million to upgrade remote border crossings
•The crossings are only 12 miles apart and get little to no traffic
•Laredo, Texas, by comparison, gets 66,000 crossings a day
•Laredo will not receive any of the $400 million in DHS border stimulus funds

the forum software automatically merges posts made by the same person if they're one after the other.

It would appear that Montana politicians have been listening to the Montana Militia, who thinks that China is going to invade via Canada. ;)

I suppose I should moan but hopefully some of that money might be used to upgrade the IT infrastructure at the POEs, I think they're linked to CBP HQ with a telegraph! The border crossing at Carway always seems to be deserted and that's a much bigger POE.

Frankly the whole thing has become utterly ludicrous, I even said that to a Border Patrol guy in Montana who just shrugged.

They are using the AFB at Great Falls to send planes to fly up and down the border - there's nothing there! Money for old rope.

But yet they still haven't got the RFID detectors in place for NEXUS cards at Sweetgrass which would actually be helpful. I've got to go down soon so I shall report back!
Steve.
