Hi Matt
Well when I was flying in, I must admit that I was asking myself just what the heck I had gotten myself into. But being on the ground here for a few weeks my view is changing and Beograd looks like an interesting spot. I've only been here a few weeks so I've barely scratched the surface. But it is an old eastern euro city. Very beautiful old buildings, very narrow and confusing streets. The thing that has struck me most about this place is the remaining bombed out buildings that are found in parts of the city. For me, it is the first time that i've seen that type of destruction and it must have been terrible for the people who live here. But there is reconstruction going and some of the streets that I've visited are very beautiful and picturesque.
There is obviously no pollution emissions standards yet and there are a number of old cars, buses and other vehicles that emit a lot of polution so at rush hour times there is a lot of smog in the air. Since I've been here the temparture has been very hot (over 30) every day so when you are in the downtown core and you mix the heat and smog it is not so pleasant.
But the people here are very warm and hospitable. The folks I have met and work with are very nice. The people are also very well educated. The city appears to be quite safe, but like anywhere else you have to use common sense.
I work for Canada Post and am on a one year assignment here with the Serbian Post to help implement a new retail post project.
Well tha's about it for now, however I do think that if people get the chance that they should experience Beograd first hand.
Regards
