That's strange. My wife and I have been using Derby Line, VT for the past three years, and we have never had a problem with them, ever. We both have jobs that fall very clearly under a specific TN category, though, so there's little room for interpretation (or mis-interpretation) for us. Perhaps that's the reason for the ease of processing for us. I don't know.

Been a lot of people on here who moan about Derby Line, do a search, I'm sure some of their posts will come up. But obviously people usually only post when they have a problem. And of course it depends on who you get and when this was, I can remember crappy experiences at various POEs but they were years and years ago. CBP compile their own list based in part on how many complaints are filed at the POE.

Incidentally, did anyone else see the story about Derby Line on Homeland Security USA over the weekend? I thought that was a truly bizarre look inside the world of bureaucracy. They've got one Border Patrol guy who seems to spend a sizable chunk of his day sat at one end of a road there that runs along the border, because one sidewalk is in the US and the other is in Canada. And apparently having children in Vermont now is officially frowned upon so Canadians have to go to a different hospital. They interviewed one woman who said it could get awkward because sometimes her dog wants to crap on the other side of the border!

DO NOT TRY AND GET A TN AT THE NIAGARA FALLS CROSSING!!! The guy that processes them there is a total jerk and has his own interpretations of the rules. I have been getting my TN for 9 yrs with now hassles and he said I should never have gotten one in the first place. I drove down the road to the Fort Erie crossing and the supervisor there looked it over and determined that I should have gotten it.

Best POE in Washington area?

Postby jteng » Mon Sep 21, 2009 5:22 pm

I'm a Newbie from Victoria BC. Planning to cross the border with TN Visa in the coming months. Typical flight for me would be from Victoria Int'l to SEATAC to Miami. Alternate route is through Vancouver Int'l. Anyone with comments about either POE?

Any advise and thoughts welcome and appreciated.

There have been several blogs regarding how bad some of the land border crossings are on the West Coast, in particular Blaine Truck Crossing and Sumas seem to be the ones to avoid. I suspect the Pre-Flight Inspections out West will be a better experience for you but be prepared for a thorough inspection at Vancouver International and Victoria.

I have heard about some not so good experiences at Vancouver International PFI in the past but none in recent memory so I suspect it will work out well for you.

Both Victoria and Vancouver airports have CBP pre-flight inspections, so, either way, you won't be getting TN from SEATAC, unless you are arriving in US from overseas; it will be done at the Cdn airport.

Great info! Thanks! Could this be confirmed? It seems that the cbp website (cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/preclear_locations.xml) lists Port Angeles as pre clearance for Victoria.
It would be wonderful if we could clear through Victoria.
