Best route for self-employed resident alien?

My spouse is coming into the US on H4 status (under which she can't work) as my dependent. I have an H1B.

In Canada, she has been self-employed and works over the Internet for Canadian clients. We're planning on having children (which means she can't work anyways for a while), but:

What is the best or fastest legal avenue for her to be able to continue her work? Is it for me to get my green card first? Or is there another way? Does it open up any avenues that she has an advanced degree in her field?

Also, if we spend a summer on Canadian soil, could she work those months without violating her H4 status?
