Best way to find a job in England from Canada.

I have a question regarding finding a job in England. I am a soon to be journeyman plumber in Canada. I know there would be courses to take in England to put me up to their standards but I have to ask if people are going for job interviews in person or applying online. Is it possible to obtain a visa without a job lined up if you have the intention of getting a job right away? (so as to find one in person) HSMP visa would probably be my best bet. Is a work permit the same as a work visa? Ahh, so many questions.
