Birth abroad, applying for Canadian citizenship for child

Postby chaimdan » Tue Jan 06, 2009 9:59 am

Hi,

I want to register my two children as Canadian citizens, I'm currently visiting Canada with a possibility of staying here indefinitely.

In the application form for Canadian citizen born abroad (not sure which to use, from outside the Canada or from within, as I'm not sure where we will be living, but I'm inclined to use from within Canada) it lists the necessary documents to be sent in and includes: Drivers license and health card...

Both of which don't seem to practical for a baby (health cards in the US don't show picture or anything for that matter aside from name and perhaps date of birth.)

I called Service Canada and spoke with someone who wasn't quite sure herself and said I should send his health card from the US (what's the point?!?)

Has anyone applied for child born outside Canada? What documents did you include?

Thanks

Thanks steven... I just tried calling that number and the prompts all seem the same as when I chose citizenship info on Service Canada, so I imagine it's probably the same service center (I didn't get through because the lines were busy)

I think you can just go to a Passport Canada office and apply for their citizenship certificates there. I recall someone else recently did that, but I can't for the life of me find the thread now, or remember who it was.

From that website:

If you were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent on/or after February 15, 1977, you must send:

a birth certificate which lists your parents (issued by government authorities in the country where you were born)
proof that one or both of your parents was a Canadian citizen when you were born (for example, citizenship certificate or Canadian birth certificate)
two (2) pieces of personal identification, such as a driver’s licence and a health insurance card
other documents, such as your marriage certificate and/or legal name change certificate (if applicable)

So you need a copy of your birth certificate and something to prove they are who you say they are, such as their birth certificates. I suppose you could get health cards but it's hard as a visitor. I can see their point that if you have a Blue Cross card from the US for each child that would establish their identity.
