Hi Everyone,

I'm applying for an ancestry visa to the UK through my grandmother who was born in Scotland. Does anyone know what a birth certificate from Scotland from the early 1900's looks like? I just got it in the mail and I'm not sure that its the right thing Sad

The title is "official extract from register of birth" which was the only document I could order from the General Register Office in Scotland.

If it was the only document they could provide you with it would likely suffice. The certificate I have is 'an offical copy of a registration of birth' As I recall and it was all printed with red ink except for the portions with name and date etc.

However that was for my grandfather whom was born in and around birmingham. Wish I could help you more.

Try doing a google image search with '"official extract from register of birth' and scotland as the parameters. you might be able to find something out that way. Smile

Good luck.

Searching for the image is a good idea. II think the certificate I have is correct. I called the General Register Office and they said that what they sent me qualifies as the "full certificate" so it sounds like its ok. Thanks for the advice!

Yes, the extract is a birth certificate. It used to be that they typed in the handwritten info from the register, but nowadays they just copy the handwriting right onto the extract, and it's sometimes hard to read. You may be interested to know that the British government is discussing abolishing the ancestry visa. It's just a proposal right now, but the New Zealand government is very concerned. Do a search in Google news on "ancestry visa" to read about it.

I'm expecting a copy of a birth certificate of my wife's mother -- which I found through scotlandspeople.gov.uk

In the laborious search for renewal of my wife's Right of Abode certificate Sad
