i just applied and received my ancestry visa. you DON'T need marriage certificates but you do need Long form birth certificate originals or notorized copies. You might not be able to apply for your grandparent's certificate but you parent (their child) should be able to through the UK.
For your proof of funds you need to send evidence from the last 3 months. These need to be stamped by your bank- online printouts won't work. also any kind of RRSP, GIC, etc should be noted.
as far as processing times it is VERY short. once all of my paperwork was sent to Ottawa, my visa was issues within a week.
Also note that the picture required is SMALLER than a passport picture. and it needs to be current within the month.
Anyone worried about sending original documents, don't be. they are sent via secure DHL and returned to you via canada post priority courier and require a signature.
As far as I'm aware for any spouses they are put on as a dependant on your ancestry visa. I don't think that as a dependent, you are allowed to work but i'm not positive on that..
hope this answers some questions. i wish i knew about this before i applied, i had a lot of questions.
