Blu-ray HD and my DVD collection

Ok when I was in the UK in the past 1999-2003 I know that NTSC dvds were region 1 and UK Pal DVDs were region 2. As I understand it HDTV in Europe is even slightly different settings.

So my question is this. I have a Sony Blu-ray player here in Canada, will a HDTV from the UK be able to play straight from the player through an HDMI cable? Such as the upconverted DVDs and blu-ray discs?

Same goes for my North American Xbox. Can I just bring it over and use it, except for buying games which probably will not work. Or is this a situation where I might be better off finding a multi region blu-ray player?

Ok just found the answer on Xbox, apparently through HDMI cable it is fine... though not all Pal games will work on the NTSC system. (particularly vexing is EA Sports)
