Border agent questions?

Post Tue Apr 26, 2011 2:05 pm

This may seem like a silly question but if anyone has an answer that would be wonderful.
I am a Canadian with a UK/Eu passport that is going to be arriving in London on may 19th. I know I have to go into the Eu passport line up but I am not sure what kind of questions they are going to ask me. Will they ask me about my finances?
I have family that I can stay with so I can provide them an address where I will spend some time.
I just don't want to be caught off guard with their questioning...I have heard they can be unfriendly at times :)

You have an EU passport and are Canadian.

Are you doing anything illegal? Are you hiding anything from them? Then there will be a problem.

Are you visiting family and going on vacation? Then you'll be fine.

Questions?

First, you'll be going thru the EU passport line, so the only thing they will be checking is the authenticity of your passport. You don't need a reason to be in UK, so they won't ask.

People who hold a EU passport can stay in the UK for an initial period of 3 months. After that period, they have to be a "qualified person" in order to be allowed to stay in the UK. Qualified persons are: workers, students, self-sufficient people, self-employed, retired people and those providing services. EU passport holders are also expected to accomodate themselves without having recourse to public funds.

So you may be asked what your occupation is, how long you intend to stay and how much money you have in savings.

The person has a UK passport.

About the only question he should be asked is if he would like a cuppa.

Our answer was meant to address the part of Agnelson's reply saying "You'll be going thru the EU passport line, so the only thing they will be checking is the authenticity of your passport.", which is true for British citizens but not for EU citizens.

I wondered the same thing. I'm a dual Canadian-Italian citizen and will be moving to the UK in September. I will initially be staying with a friend. Should I just have a proof of funds letter and her address handy? I won't have a job yet and will be arriving on a one-way ticket. Will I have any issues? I've been to the UK, London in particular many times and just as a visitor they have always questioned me quite a bit.... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

You should present your Italian passport at the border. As an EEA national, you have an initial right of residence in the UK of 3 months without necessarily exercising your Treaty Rights. After 3 months, you'll need to be exercising your Treaty Rights either by working (including looking for a job), studying or being self-sufficient.

Ok, great. I plan on looking for a job right away, but I just wasn't sure what to expect when I initially arrive. Thanks!
