I think California tests everyone from anywhere, so at least they're consistent.

If you can show you're exempt (or you've applied and you haven't got it yet) you don't need to, depends on the DMV office. One of my relatives had this exact problem, there on L-2 and hadn't gotten her SSN yet, the first DMV office wouldn't do it so she went to a second one and they would. Get a letter from the SSA office where you apply saying that you've applied and you should be okay.

I'm a Canadian in Nashville and was wondering the same thing about bringing my car to the states. My car is my own and has been paid off. Do the previous replies apply to my situation as well? Thanks!

The procedure is the same for everyone essentially, the main difference is how the State registration procedure works. Tennessee apparently will charge you sales tax regardless of the fact it is a personal effect.

Hi,

I'm moving to the US on a TN visa and would like to import my Canadian car into the US. While there is a lot of information on the US vehicle import formalities (including the info in this thread), I have not found any information on Canadian export regulations. Is it because there are no required Canadian export formalities for cars? US seems to have car export formalities when importing a car into Canada, doesn't Canada require something similar in the opposite direction?

Thanks for any info.

Not unless you still owe money on it. The lien holder may not let you export it.

There are no export procedures per se on either end, but to import a car into Canada you have to have proof that it complies with Canadian safety specs, which is why you need the letter as explained on http://www.riv.ca

The US is essentially the same but the stickers on the car usually indicate that it complies, if it doesn't, it's worth getting the letter in case someone at the EPA or CBP asks. Canadian safety specs are usually tougher than US standards so going to the US with your car is usually simpler. There are exceptions though, for example if the State has some screwy standard like California.

Depends on how old your car is too, like it says at the start of the thread, Canada isn't as tough on the airbag requirement as the US.

No, you have to own it, which means you have a bill of sale for it. Even if it were possible to transfer the lease, it means the company that holds the lease would be responsible for the import of the vehicle rather than you and nobody will do that for you. Even if they would, they'd charge you a mint I suspect. Whoever owns the vehicle must comply with the import procedures.

Your question is a bit confusing, but I take it you're saying the car was originally from California and you've leased it in Canada?
